Mookmati, the silent earth
Our name comes from Mookmati, the epic by Acharya Vidyasagar Ji. Its central figure is ordinary clay, shaped through patience and care into something of use and beauty.
That idea guides everything we do. We believe the humblest materials, worked by skilled hands, can become objects worth keeping for a lifetime.
Guided by non-violence
Mookmati is inspired by non-violence as taught by Acharya Vidyasagar Ji. For us, ahimsa is a practical test we apply to every product we sell.
- Materials. We favour natural fibres, natural dyes and materials that are gentle on the earth.
- Makers. We work with artisans and small workshops, and we pay fairly for their skill and time.
- Pace. Handmade work takes time. We would rather wait for a piece than rush the people making it.
We are starting small, with hand block-printed bedsheets from Rajasthan. Sarees, handloom, jewellery, home decor, serveware and handicrafts will follow as we find artisans whose work we are proud to share.
